NorthStar supports spay and neuter campaigns and believes these
procedures to be important in controlling the rise in stray pet
populations. Spaying and neutering your pet helps ensure that there
will be fewer destitute animals in need of care. In addition, spaying
helps prevent mammary cancer and uterine tract infections in females.
In males it aids in the prevention of testicular cancer, prostate cancer as well as prostate infections.
Some extensive research has shown that dogs and
cats can be safely spayed and neutered at ages earlier than 6 months. It
has also been shown that younger puppies and kittens recover more quickly
from surgery than do older animals. We do pediatric spays and neuters. We
ask that your pets be fully vaccinated and weigh more than 3 pounds to
qualify for pediatric spaying/neutering. The anesthesia is very safe and will not harm young pets.
We ask that our spay and canine neuter patients stay with us overnight so that we can examine them the next morning to make sure they are doing well. We uphold this policy to ensure that your pet is healthy and ready to take on daily activities in your home. Because we do not enter the abdomen when we neuter male cats, they can go home the same day.
